On April 6th, Lynne Davies and a group of her friends did a sponsored walk from Tanygrisiau to Llanfrothen to raise money for The South Snowdonia Search and Rescue Team, the weather was very cold with heavy snow showers, and the children especially, must be congratulated for their efforts. Welcome to stiniog.com,the website of the "Blaenau Project"
Much has been written and recorded of the slate mining industry in Blaenau Ffestiniog. Books produced by both the town’s famous tourist centres provide an insight into the industry but say little about the history of the town itself. The excellent 1980’s book “Stiniog” by Ernest Jones would seem to be the only 20th century publication dealing with the subject and before that one has to turn to the 19th century and the rare “Hanes Plwyf Festiniog”.
The growth of the town as a result of the slate mining industry is fascinating story but very few people these days are aware of its remarkable development. As the older generations disappear, much knowledge and tradition is lost forever – unless something is done soon the opportunity of gathering and recording for future generations will be lost.
This is where “The Blaenau Project” comes in. With the participation of those already interested in local history and the townspeople themselves, the project will hopefully bring together all that is the history of the town. The Project aims to encourage as many people as possible to be involved, whatever their knowledge of local history and its research or their language – the only qualification is an INTEREST IN THE HISTORY OF BLAENAU.
